From the Principal - Mrs Katie Browne
Dear Families,
Monday 1 September was not only the first day of Spring but also World Day of Prayer Care for Creation. Pope Fracis wrote Laudato Si’ On Care for our Common Home 10 years ago and it continues to inform our work in caring for creation. These are the words of Pope Leo XIV:
The theme of this World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, chosen by our beloved Pope Francis, is “Seeds of Peace and Hope”. On the tenth anniversary of the establishment of this Day of Prayer, which coincided with the publication of the Encyclical Laudato Si’, we find ourselves celebrating the present Jubilee as “Pilgrims of Hope.” This year’s theme thus appears most timely.
In proclaiming the Kingdom of God, Jesus often used the image of the seed. As the time of his Passion drew near, he applied that image to himself, comparing himself to the grain of wheat that must die in order to bear fruit (cf. Jn 12:24). Seeds are buried in the earth, and there, to our wonder, life springs up, even in the most unexpected places, pointing to the promise of new beginnings. We can think, for example, of flowers springing up on our roadsides from seeds that landed up there almost by chance. As those flowers grow, they brighten the gray tarmac and even manage to break through its hard surface.
In Christ, we too are seeds, and indeed, “seeds of peace and hope.”
As a community let us be seeds of hope living our vision of being a faithful and compassionate community that aspires to life long learning.
Wishing all Fathers a Happy Father's day this coming weekend.
God Bless,
Katie Browne

Bullying. No Way! National Week of Action.
The recent “Bullying. No Way! National Week of Action” (August 11-15) offers a timely reminder of the importance of speaking up. This year's theme was a powerful one: Be Bold, Be Kind, Speak Up.
Often, we find that issues have been occurring for some time before they are brought to our attention. This makes it much harder for us to intervene and find a resolution. That’s why it's so important that we empower our young people to tell a trusted adult when a comment or action is not okay.
If your child comes home and mentions a situation happening at school, on the bus, or online, please encourage them to speak up and let a staff member know. Remember, hurtful behaviour is often a form of communication. Sometimes, the students involved are also struggling and need our support. By working together, we can help our students make kinder and more respectful choices. If you are concerned about a young person then please have a conversation with us. Sometimes it is in the conversation that we can find a solution together that might assist a situation from getting worse.
Bus Incident
Following an unfortunate bus incident last week, we would like to remind all families about our expectations for student behaviour on school transport. A bus driver was verbally and racially harassed, and we are grateful for his professionalism in handling a very difficult situation. This was a deeply upsetting experience for him and our students who witnessed it, and as a school community, we want to ensure we are doing everything we can to support our bus drivers.
Bus drivers are an essential part of our school community and work hard to ensure the safety of our children. They undergo rigorous checks and are held to a high standard. It is vital that we all support them by ensuring our children understand the importance of respectful and sensible behaviour on the bus.
Please talk to your child about the rules:
- Remain seated with your seatbelt on.
- Keep devices put away.
- Be considerate of others by keeping noise to a minimum.
If your child reports inappropriate behaviour on the bus to you, please contact the bus company directly as they are the first point of contact and can address the matter quickly. If the behaviour involves a St Paul's student, please also let the school know so we can follow up.

Toys at School
We've noticed a recent increase in the number of toys being brought to school. While we understand that students are excited to share their things with friends, toys can be a significant distraction during class time and can sometimes lead to conflict between students.
To help create a more focused and harmonious learning environment, we are reinforcing our school policy: No toys are allowed at school. This includes action figures, dolls, trading cards, and other similar items. We appreciate your support in ensuring these items are left at home.
Fidget and Sensory Items
We recognize that some students benefit from having sensory tools to help them focus and regulate in the classroom. Items like fidget spinners, fidget cubes, and Squishies can be valuable aids for certain students.
However, to ensure these items are used appropriately and don't become a distraction, they are only allowed in the classroom with prior discussion and agreement with the teacher. This allows the teacher to determine if the item is a helpful tool for the student and to set clear expectations for its use.
Thank you for your cooperation in helping us maintain a positive and productive learning environment for everyone.
Soccer Gala Day
Many of our students from Years 3, 4, 5 & 6 participated in a soccer gala day with students from nearby Catholic Schools. The feedback from the students has been overwhelmingly positive and the teachers who attended have praised our students for their efforts. Gala days promote participation and fair play in a non-competitive environment. Some of our students may not have had the opportunity to engage in team sport or have never played an official game of soccer before, but were able to access the sport in a fun, safe way with their peers.
A big thank you to the parents who supported the teams on the day. Without your assistance, we would not have been able to participate.
eSafety
In the last newsletter I mentioned the eSafety Commissioner website in regards to the upcoming changes to social media laws and age of access. As mentioned, this is a great resource as a parent to support you on the everchanging journey that is information technology (IT).
Whilst our school is part of the “managed” program for iPads through Catholic Education Diocese of Wollongong (CEDoW), our students are still accessing the world wide web and social media through other devices at home that may not have similar restrictions. The eSafety website has some Online safety basics to support us as adults when setting boundaries and our children being safe online. Their Three key strategies are outlined below;
1. Be engaged, open and supportive
- Get involved with your child’s online activities as a family. Play games together. Talk about favourite apps, games or websites.
- Keep lines of communication open. Ask about their online experiences, who they are talking to and whether they are having any issues.
- Reassure your child they can always come to you, no matter what. Your child may not communicate openly about things that worry them online if they fear being in trouble if they tell you. Let them know you will not cut off internet or device access if they tell you they’re feeling uncomfortable or unsafe online.
- If you notice a change in your child’s behaviour or mood, talk with them about it. If you are concerned, consider seeking professional help – from your GP, a psychologist or school counsellor.
2. Set some rules
- Set rules for devices and online access, with consequences for breaking them. As they grow in online skills and maturity you can review your rules together.
- Get your child’s input — this will help them understand risks.
- Model behaviour that you would like to see. Children will be more likely to follow rules if they see you doing the same.
- Consider creating a family tech agreement (sometimes called a family media plan or family online safety agreement). This is a set of rules about how devices are used in your home as well as what acceptable online behaviour looks like. eSafety has created downloadable templates for families with children under 5 or those with kids aged 5 to 8 years. For families with older children, The Family Online Safety Contract from ThinkUKnow Australia is a good starting point.
3. Use safety features and settings
- Get to know the devices you and your children use and set them up for privacy and online safety. Take advantage of parental controls to monitor and control screen time and access to content, based on your child’s age and experience. See our guide to parental controls.
- Choose apps and games carefully, and visit the App Store or Google Play for age ratings and consumer advice.
- Refer to our advice about screen time and online gaming if these are of concern.
- The eSafety Guide provides valuable information about the latest games, apps and social media, including how to protect your personal information and report harmful content.
- You can visit the Australian Classification Board’s online database, Children and Media Australia and Common Sense Media (US) for information about movies, apps, games and websites, searchable by age.

World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation
The World Day of Creation, or more formally the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, is an annual Christian event observed on September 1st, which also marks the beginning of the Season of Creation.
The day is inspired by Pope Francis' landmark encyclical Laudato Si’, which calls on "every person living on this planet" to care for our shared Earth.
The theme in this Jubilee Year is "Seeds of Peace and Hope" and, in his message for the occasion, Pope Leo XIV reflects on Jesus' use of the image of the seed and how, in Christ, we are also “seeds of peace and hope."
Echoing the words of the prophet Isaiah, which inspire the theme of the ecumenical Season of Creation, Pope Francis reminds us that "prayer, determination and concrete actions" are necessary to make "an arid and parched desert into a garden, a place of rest and serenity."

Contact details
It is important that your contact details are up to date. It would be appreciated if you could log onto the Compass Parent Portal and check that your mobile/telephone number and email address are correct.
If you find that they are incorrect, you may update them in the portal.
Please also check that your email address is reachable, we sometimes find that we receive ‘bounce backs’ due full inboxes.
School Fees
From the commencement of the 2025 school year, the management of certain aspects relating to school fee accounts in Primary Schools has been transferred to the School Fees Liaison Office at the Catholic Education in Wollongong.
What does this mean for families:
- Your school’s administration office is your first place for enquiry regarding school fees. School staff will provide information regarding instalments, methods of payment, giving access to an Application for Fee Concession and attend to other general enquiries.
- If you are experiencing financial difficulty or need to make an arrangement for payment of your school fee account, please email sflo@dow.catholic.edu.au with your name and the school in which your children are enrolled. The School Fees Liaison Office will then contact you directly to offer assistance.
- Please note that each school has a dedicated School Fees Liaison Officer to provide a personalised service to individual families. This Officer will also have a close relationship with your school.
If you require further information about this initiative, please do not hesitate to contact the school office.
Injuries
If you child sustains an injury outside of school eg broken arm / leg and they have a cast/sling etc the office must be informed and a letter from the Doctor / ED report must be given to the office so that a risk assessment and care plan can be done for the student.
Only medication that is prescribed by a doctor is permitted to be dispensed at School upon completion of a “Consent to Dispense Medication” form which is available from the office. The form and the medication are to be given to the office staff in the original packaging with the student’s name and dosage. We are not permitted to administer Panadol unless prescribed by a doctor and the necessary form completed. Thank you for your cooperation with this.
If your child is Asthmatic or Anaphylactic please ensure the necessary plan has been forwarded to the office along with any medication so that it can be processed. We also need a "Consent to Dispense Medication" form to be completed.
This year we will be holding a Father's Day breakfast at the school on Wednesday 3rd September.
