From the Principal - Mrs Katie Browne
Dear Families,
This Sunday is Social Justice Sunday. The statement for this year is “Truth and Peace: A Gospel Word in a Violent World.” This statement encourages us to turn to the gospels to seek answers to the challenges we face in our world today. With the emergence of technology we have found easier platforms to air our opinions and views without taking the time to consider the potential impact these may have on others. Social media and gaming is becoming increasingly popular among young people and yet we continue to allow them to access it without understanding the full implications of what they are being exposed to and how their brains are interpreting what they are seeing and hearing. It seems that violence is the side effect of over exposure to content that is not made for young developing brains. We have a joint responsibility to ensure we are supporting our young people to be able to develop free of inappropriate content and know how to self regulate when they are faced with challenges. We can be inspired by our popes: “Using scripture and the guidance of Pope St. John XXIII’s Pacem in Terris and Pope Francis’ Fratelli Tutti, we learn that peace is possible if we put our trust in Christ who is the way, the truth and the life and the Prince of Peace. It is from him that we learn about the architecture of peace. From him, we learn a commitment to the culture of encounter, the value of dialogue at all levels and the importance of seeing everyone as our sister, our brother.”
(Taken from socialjustice.catholic.org.au)
As John says in the Gospel: Lord, whom shall we go to? You have the words of everlasting life. This term we have been speaking a lot about determination. It will take a great deal of determination for us as a community to ensure we continue to keep our young people safe and be able to develop in a world where there is increasing violence and anger. May we work together to ensure peace and be guided by our faith in God.
Thank you to the community for taking the time to provide feedback as part of my recent appraisal process. This was an affirming and supportive appraisal and I was overwhelmed by the positive support from all parts of the community. The panel affirmed the areas I had indicated were the next phase of my principalship and I look forward to working towards these goals in ensuring our community continues to thrive. A report will be written and I will meet with Mr Peter Hill at the end of term to finalise this process.
God Bless,
Hall Fence
Last week saw the completion of the fence around the Hall. This has been a wonderful update to our school security and means our students are now safe within the school boundary when using the hall. As a result the new procedure for the hall will be as follows:
- Visitors are to enter and leave via the school office when attending events in the hall.
- The gate will only be opened in circumstances where an emergency vehicle needs to enter the cola areas or large deliveries need to be made. Children are not to be in the area when this occurs.
- Visitors who wish to attend an assembly have the following options to choose from:
- Park in Innes road, walk around to attend the assembly and then leave via the back gate following the assembly and the bell at 3pm.
- Park out the front of the school. Following the assembly wait for the bell at 3pm and then walk out with the walkers group and be dismissed once the first lot of buses have left. If this is your preferred option then discuss with your child/ren about lining up with the walkers line at buslines on these days.
These decisions are based on the safety of all members of the community. Visitors are not to walk out between buses to cross the road. Families are reminded that pick up time is 3pm and not before. Once you have collected your children after 3pm leave promptly so children are not running up and down the footpath and access to the footpaths are not being blocked by groups.
We ask for your full cooperation in keeping our community safe.
Birthday Parties
Birthdays are a wonderful part of growing up. To ensure ease in managing the range of things families like to do we ask from some consistency. If you wish to share your child’s birthday with the class then please observe the following requests:
- Teachers will only distribute invitations if they are for the whole class. Families who wish to only invite a small group will need to make other arrangements to distribute the invites outside of school.
- Only items that are prepared in individual portions are to be supplied if you wish to share a birthday cake, for example; cupcakes, donuts or ice blocks. Do not send whole cakes that require cutting up please.
Thank you in advance for your understanding.
Retreats
This week Mrs Browne will be attending the Principal's Retreat on Thursday and Friday. Mr Farrugia will be the Acting Principal on these days. The Assistant Principal’s retreat is in Week 6 and the Religious Education Coordinator’s Retreat is in Week 9. These retreats are an important part of the leadership team's spiritual formation and are highly valued by the diocese as an essential element in supporting leadership growth.
Book Parade
Book week runs this week across the country however we will be holding our book parade in Week 4 of Term 4. This is the same week as Grandparents day and the book fair. We will set the actual date closer to the event however to assist with planning the theme of book week this year is “Reading is Magical”. Children will be encouraged to dress up as a book character or in relation to the theme. Any children that do not wish to dress up can wear their sports uniform on that day. More details will come closer to the event.
Out of School Hours Care - OOSH
Catholic Care is seeking an expression of interest regarding holding an OOSH program at St Paul’s in the school Hall. Catholic Care has first rights to provide an OOSH program in schools which is a decision of the Bishop in the Wollongong diocese. Naturally they can only do this if they have enough interest to make the service viable and maintain its viability. If this is something that interests you then please complete the survey.

Butterfly Foundation Presentation
We have been fortunate to receive an opportunity to have a member of the Butterfly Foundation to do a presentation around Body Image to our Year 5 & 6 class on 3rd September. Joining us on the day will be students from St Thomas Aquinas Bowral, St Michael’s Mittagong and Glenquarry Public. This day is being funded by the Bowral District Children’s Foundation. We appreciate their generosity in providing this great service to our schools. A letter will be sent to parents via compass with further details.
Students on Visas and Residency
You also need to inform the school office if your child has gone from a Temporary to Permanent Resident of Australia or if they have become a Citizen (we do require a copy of the Citizenship Certificate).
From the Assistant Principal - Mr Simon Farrugia
NAPLAN is unique because it is the only national assessment that all Australian students undertake. Each year, students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9 participate in this standardised testing to provide a snapshot of their proficiency in essential skills such as reading, writing, and numeracy.
It’s important to understand that while NAPLAN provides valuable insights, it is just one piece of the puzzle when it comes to assessing a child’s learning. Teachers regularly evaluate students through various methods, including whole-school formal assessments, classwork, pre- and post-assessment tasks and observations. This ongoing assessment helps build a complete picture of a student’s abilities and progress. NAPLAN results can complement this by providing additional information that might highlight areas of strength or areas where extra support might be beneficial.
For parents, NAPLAN results are a useful tool to gauge how your child is performing. However, they should be considered alongside the regular feedback you receive from teachers and your own observations of your child's learning and development.
If you have any questions about your child’s NAPLAN results or their overall progress, we encourage you to reach out to their teacher for further discussion and support.
Thank you,
From the REC - Ms Catherine du Bois
