From the Principal - Mrs Katie Browne
God, Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
courage to change the things I can
and the wisdom to know the difference.
Dear Families,
Last newsletter I spoke about respect and what it means for us as individuals because we have aligned the value of respect with St Paul. It took an experience with God for Paul to realise that he was being disrespectful and to change his ways. Taking responsibility for our own behaviour is necessary and important however calling out disrespect is often harder. It takes a great deal of courage to be able to say to someone the way they are speaking about another is disrespectful. When we choose to not call out disrespect we are being a bystander. We are essentially sending the message that the other person's behaviour is acceptable. If we are to truly respect the dignity of every individual then it is necessary that we start to be protective of each individual’s dignity letting people know that when they say unkind things about another, make a judgement or hurtful assumptions they are not being respectful. Second to this is how we respond to disrespectful people towards ourselves. When we allow their words and actions to impact us we give them power over ourselves. When we take courage and stand up to disrespect we let that person know it's not ok. Jesus was not afraid to call out disrespect. When the men were going to stone the woman because of her sins He challenged them to reflect on themselves first and foremost before scorning another. May we take courage from Jesus when we are confronted with disrespect against ourselves or see it in action to be able to call it out.
I hope that all families had a lovely long weekend and were able to enjoy the beautiful weather after the very wet week. On Friday staff spent the day reflecting on assessment in mathematics and how we can ensure consistency across the grades in the way we assess. This day was a successful day led by Mrs Claremont, Mrs Curcuruto and Mr Boss. This learning will continue this week with the following System Professional Learning days:
Tuesday 11 June - Mrs Browne, Mr Farrugia and Ms DuBois will be attending System Professional Learning day. Mrs Sandra Hogan will be at school as the Relief Principal.
Wednesday 12 June - Mrs Browne, Mrs Claremont and Mrs Adams will be attending the NSW curriculum Mathematics Day. Mr Farrugia will be Acting Principal
Thursday 13 June - Mrs Browne and Mrs Claremont will be attending a day with Professor Jim Tognolini on assessment. Mr Farrugia will be attending MacKillop touch Trials. Mrs Sandra Hogan will be at school as the Relief Principal.
God Bless,

Changes to Academic Reports
As you may be aware, the NSW Educational Standards Authority (NESA) have undertaken a comprehensive review of the NSW Curriculum, leading to curriculum reform and subsequent implementation of a reformed curriculum which commenced in 2023. In response to the curriculum changes, Catholic Education Diocese of Wollongong has made significant modifications to student semester reports for Primary schools to better reflect your child's academic progress at key points throughout the year and provide parents and carers with a clear picture of their child’s strengths and areas for improvement in specific subject areas.
The following changes will be evident in your child’s semester report from Semester 1 2024:
- A ‘new look’ report format released via Compass reflecting the outcomes of the new K-10 English and Mathematics syllabuses providing a descriptor for each of the focus areas found in the respective syllabuses
- All Kindergarten students will now receive a written report in Semester 1 and Semester 2 with a three-point grade scale used to report student achievement using the following performance descriptors:
- Thorough
- Sound
- Basic
- Students in Year 1 - Year 6 will continue to receive semester reports twice a year with a five-point grade scale used to report student achievement using the following performance descriptors:
- Extensive
- Thorough
- Sound
- Basic
- Elementary
Report formats are also available for students who are working towards outcomes by which a graded report will not accurately represent their learning progress. As an alternative to a graded report, a comment is provided for each Key Learning Area in line with the student’s goals identified in their Personalised Plan. These reports are only used following consultation between school and parents/carers.
We look forward to this positive shift in our reporting system and appreciate your continued support in your child's educational journey.
Fence Changes
We have, in consolation with the Parish, been given approval to move the fence so that it encloses the hall and ensures that students are within the school boundary at all times. We thank CEDoW for funding this and the parish for their understanding. The parish will still be able to access the hall outside of school hours through the usual booking system. It is anticipated that the work will be completed in the school holidays.
Leave
Mrs Adams will be taking two weeks leave in Weeks 9 and 10 of Term 2 to attend a family event overseas. During this time Mrs Bull will be taking Year 5. Parents who would like to discuss their child’s report with Mrs Adams will be able to do so early next term.
