From the Principal - Mrs Katie Browne
God loved the world so much, he gave his only Son,
that all who believe in him might have eternal life.
Third Sunday of Lent.
Dear families,
It was a joy to be a part of the School Swimming Carnival and subsequent assembly to hand out the ribbons and medals. On the day of the carnival we saw our mission being lived.
Our mission is to create a compassionate community by being:
- Christ centred
- Welcoming and inclusive
- Respectful of each person’s dignity
- Committed to growth in faith, learning and wellbeing
Children were having a go and some even raced in an event for the first time (growth in learning and wellbeing), waited patiently and looked out for each other (respectful of each person's dignity) and had fun joining in with each other (welcoming and inclusive). Our Kindergarten and Year 1 students also had a great day back at school. The assembly was a wonderful celebration of the carnival and a chance to acknowledge all those that achieved excellent results and wonderful sportsmanship. Thank you to the staff who spent a great deal of time preparing for this event, especially Mrs Norman and Mr Farrugia. Carnivals and assemblies like this don’t happen without a great deal of planning and preparation. If you have any feedback we welcome it. As a school we have a lot to be proud of with these events.
Last week I participated in Safety Intervention Training and Mr Farrugia is participating in the same training this week. In Week 8 all staff will participate in a two hour workshop on how to de-escalate challenging behaviours. This training is very well supported by good PB4L procedures and quality classroom instruction. We are regularly reviewing our procedures in order to set the students up for success.
This week staff begin working in their professional planning teams. They will be focusing on data collected from a place value test to determine the next steps in their teaching practice in order to support their children’s learning. This work is part of our Annual Improvement Plan goal which is: Students will demonstrate growth in mathematics through engagement that is informed by quality assessment and responsive pedagogies. In preparation for this work, staff engaged in some professional learning during the second day of the year on the place value test and will now work together to analyse the data in order to develop lessons that will support the children progressing in their place value knowledge. These are foundational skills for students to learn in order to develop and advance in their mathematical knowledge.
Wishing our community a safe and happy week.
Thank you and God Bless,
Smart Device Guidelines
We have recently reviewed guidelines for Smart device use at school. Smart devices are defined as anything that can connect to another device and send and receive messages, access the internet and take photos and record. Examples of the type of devices are phones, laptops, iPads and watches. These guidelines and the procedures embedded will be implemented from Week 6. Staff will unpack the expectations around smart devices at school with their classes this week. Please review these guidelines and discuss them with your children at home.
Proposed Drainage works in Garrett Street
The council will be completing drainage works from the first week of March until the end of April. Traffic flow will be severely interrupted as one lane will be closed at a time leaving one only one lane/one way access. This work will take up to 8 weeks. Please allow extra time to get to school during this time.
Change of Date for staff Spirituality Day
Please note that the pupil free day for the staff Spirituality day has been changed to Friday 5 April. This is so we can engage the CLEM team from the Catholic Education Office to support us on this day. There will be no one on the school site on this day.
Eating and lunch boxes
Children are reminded that eating time is predominantly in the classroom. If children wish to continue eating outside because they have not finished, they will be asked to sit on the seats outside the library until they are finished. This is to ensure that food is not being dropped in the playground. We have reminded children that we do not share food due to allergies and it is best if they cannot finish their food that they take it home. Please ensure lunches are based on nutritious options and avoid sending lollies and chocolates in your child’s lunch box. These are best kept for home. There are some great ideas for healthy lunches on this website: https://www.healthylunchboxweek.org.au/

Year 5 & 6 Excursion to Canberra
Here are some students recounts of the day:
By Odhran Connolly - Year 6
Our bus drive there was pretty fun, with year six boys winning the singing contest easily against the year six girls. Our first stop was parliament house, which was huge and loaded with guards that have weapons. We saw the House of Representatives and the Senate in action which was cool but would've been better if our instructor didn’t keep pausing the sound.
Next was a garden full of trees, flowers, and very green grass. We sat down on a bench and devoured our food because we were all super hungry. After eating all year 5 and year 6 had a big game of never ending tag.
Then we went to The War Memorial. There were cool planes and land vehicles everywhere.
Also well known soldiers medals and a soldier's gravestone named Harry who was a First Nation Australian. Then we went to the wall with all the names of soldiers who fought for our country. Then a huge grave of the unknown soldier.
Last but not least, we stopped at The Old Parliament House where we answered questions about parliament in the 1900’s. I also found out some information about the old senate which is almost 100 years old and the chairs were so comfy. Canberra was amazing and fun for me and my class loved it.
By Oscar Warburton - Year 6
We left at school at 7:30AM and we arrived at Parliament House at about 9:30AM. At Parliament House we went to a little room where we role-played what would happen to make a decision. After that we went to the Senate and the House of Representatives. Then we saw a massive lego version of parliament house.
After the new Parliament House we went to Canberra War memorial. At the war memorial we went into a very big room with the unknown Australian Soldier. We also looked at a train station in the Middle East where a fight was going on.
Lastly we went to Old Parliament House where we had a keycard and we had to tap or slide the keycard across something and when we finished it transported our information to another computer which was really cool.
We then got back on the bus and had a settled and calm drive back home. We got back at 5:45PM.

Staying on Task
Self Management
- Look at your task or assignment.
- Think about the steps and equipment needed to complete the task.
- Focus all of your attention on the tasks.
- Stop working only when instructed.
If families are getting rid/throwing out any hot wheels tracks/cars, marbles or ping pong balls the school would be happy to take them to add to our STEM resources.
